Sydney Airport expansion reaches completion
Australia’s most important infrastructure asset has grown considerably in size with the upgrade and expansion of Sydney Airport’s International Terminal completed on schedule by Bovis Lend Lease.

Completion of the project, which saw the departures level of the international terminal grow by more than 7,300 square metres, was officially marked by Transport & Infrastructure Minister the Honourable Anthony Albanese MP at a recent plaque unveiling ceremony.

Bovis Lend Lease was appointed Managing Contractor for the expansion of Sydney International Terminal by Sydney Airport Corporation Ltd (SACL) in October 2007 and work commenced on the project in December that year. The expansion is part of a $500 million investment in the International Terminal.

“This was a large scale project that presented unique challenges and as such required careful planning and a collaborative approach with our project partners. Our specialist capability in structuring major projects of extreme complexity ensured its successful delivery on time and on budget,” said Bovis Lend Lease Australia Chief Executive Officer Tony Costantino.

“We have a strong history of projects at Sydney Airport, having previously completed the $250 million Qantas Domestic Terminal and the $500 million Sydney Airport 2000 Project for the Olympics, and we are proud to have now completed another vital component of Australia’s busiest airport,” he added.

Bovis Lend Lease structured the project to ensure normal operations were maintained throughout construction. Working closely with SACL’s project manager APP, construction was carefully planned and undertaken to enable aircraft movements to proceed unaffected, while critical construction elements were completed during curfew hours. On average there was a team of 200 workers on site daily.

Completed in four stages, the expansion and upgrade of Sydney International Terminal involved construction of a suspended 7,300 square metre floor slab housing the future baggage handling system, new retail and dining facilities (on the existing departures level) as well as the capacity to provide future air lounges.

The project also involved the consolidation of a new central immigration and security area for more efficient passenger flows, the refurbishment of the existing 30,000 square metre departures level to provide upgraded gate lounges and improved facilities such as seating and waiting areas. Additionally, the landside retail facilities including duty free, specialty retail and food outlets have been redeveloped. There are now more than 100 retailers in the International Terminal.

As a world leader in airport planning, design and construction, Bovis Lend Lease has been involved in over 50 airport and aviation related projects around the world in the past decade.

Construction facts:
Bovis Lend Lease installed 108 concrete piles during construction, each over 45 metres deep
10,000 cubic metres of concrete were used in the new departures slab
1,000 tonnes of structural steel were used
110 large pre-cast concrete panels were used
There were 10,500 square metres of roofing used
More than 100 tonnes of glass has been installed in the skylight panels
Sustainability initiatives included the use of recycled water for toilet flushing and high performance glass panels in the skylight.
